Answer

If you don’t have supporting documents, don’t panic! It’s wise to explain this in writing to Student Finance England, Wales or Northern Ireland when you apply and, if you feel comfortable, explain some of the circumstances that will help them build a picture of the estrangement. There is now an estrangement team at the SLC who are there to help people who are finding it hard to get the evidence. You can’t contact them directly but if you say this on your application for a loan, they will direct you to this specialist team and they will usually arrange a telephone interview with you to either help you gather the evidence or make a decision about you there and then. The Diversity team can also contact the estrangement team on your behalf so do contact us if you are in this situation.
